ABOUT
Diane L. Schneider, MD
Dr. Diane Schneider is a geriatrician and epidemiologist-turned-writer living in San Diego, California who grew up in suburban Philadelphia and traveled to the South for education at Wake Forest University (BS), University of Kentucky (Med), University of Louisville School of Medicine (MD), Emory University Affiliated Hospitals (Internal Medicine Residency and Geriatrics Fellowship), and later Harvard School of Public Health (MSc).
As a physician with expertise in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, her academic career focused on clinical care and clinical research of men and women at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Her research findings were published in, among others, JAMA – The Journal of the American Medical Association and The Annals of Internal Medicine.
After a series of back surgeries forced her retirement, she began writing for a general instead of scientific audience. Prometheus Books published her consumer health book, The Complete Book of Bone Health, a guide to prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
Her current project is a memoir, Lives on Brown Cards: A Physician’s Unexpected Journey that chronicles her experiences as a newly minted doctor at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and how she finds her humanity and that of her patients. An excerpt, “Killer Bees,” won a spot in the San Diego Memoir Showcase competition and was performed on stage in 2019 and was published Shaking the Tree: Brazen. Short. Memoir. (Volume 3): I Didn’t See That One Coming. Another excerpt, “Stuck,” will be published in an upcoming anthology of short stories in Shaking the Tree, Volume 6: What Just Happened?
On sunny Southern California days, Diane can be found piloting her boat “Lady Di” with her husband, a retired Naval aviator, around San Diego Bay or up the coast to Catalina Island.
